Are you becoming a ‘Dermaparentologist’?

London [25th July 2017]: With parents managing their child’s skin every day for an average of six years, and some parents spending just 30 minutes per year with a GP assessing their child’s skin, there is an emerging trend of parents becoming skin care experts, or ‘Dermaparentologists’. Commissioned by Epaderm^® Junior in partnership with talkhealth, a first-of-its-kind study followed 200 parents of children with eczema over the course of one year. Parents monitored their child’s skin using an ‘Eczema Tracker’ to measure their emotional and physical journey, as well as explored the parents’ choice of treatment for their child’s skin.

A positive result of the study was improvement in awareness of their child’s skin condition. By the end of the year, over 60% of parents reported that close monitoring had a positive impact on their child’s eczema.  When considering treatment, almost all of those surveyed (94%) understood the importance of checking the ingredients of the emollients they used on their child’s skin to reduce any additional irritation.

The study also showed that parents who used the ‘Eczema Tracker’ became more experienced in what worked best for their children, with 82% finding the process helpful and 99% recommending it for other parents.

About Epaderm/talkhealth Eczema Tracker study
The Epaderm/talkhealth Eczema Tracker study was conducted over a 12 month period involving a cohort of 200 parents to better understand the daily physical and emotional challenges of managing eczema faced by parents of children with the condition. Parents were asked a series of questions to understand the emotional and physical journey, together with themed questions covering seasonal topics such as winter skin, allergies and returning to school. In addition, parents were asked to monitor their child’s skin on a monthly basis on the ‘Eczema Tracker’.
One clear outcome of the study was awareness with 80% of parents stating they were now more aware of their child’s skin condition as a direct result of being involved in the tracker study. The ‘Eczema Tracker’ has been an extremely successful experience for the parents and children who have been part of the study.
